  • I want to be able to appoint my bishop!
  • I herebydecree that I, Gregory VII. and all future popes shall have full control over the Church and Monarchs. Including the ability to excommunicate secular leaders!
  • I will now excommunicate thy Henry IV from his position as King! Removing all his power and influence over the Church's actions!
  • I beg of you, have mercy!
  • During the Middle Ages conflict arose between the German Monarchs and the Roman Catholic Popes. The Holy Roman Empire was a Catholic version of the Roman Empire ruled by the German Kings. They had a very strong influence over the church and were very influential. However,fighting began over the right to appoint bishops and who could have influence over the Church.
  • PLEASE FORGIVE ME!
  • I will forgave you only if you wait in the snow for three days!
  • After this conflict arose, Pope Gregory issued a set of rules that gave him full authority over the Monarchs and the Church. In these laws, he stated that he was allowed to excommunicate any powerful leaders including kings! This meant that Pope Gregory was allowed to remove any current King from their title and influence!
  • Pope Gregory will pay for his heinous crimes against the monarchy!
  • This decree incited King Henry's rage who, in an act of defiance, assigned his own bishop to the town of Milan, Italy. This caused Pope Gregory to appoint his own bishop in order to defend his law. Angered by this, KIng Henry attempted to remove Gregory from the position of POpe. However, this just led to him being excommunicated by Gregory.
  • Our "agreement" gives me no power, and you all of it!
  • How dare you ignore our agreement, you ignoramus!
  • After being excommunicated by Pope Gregory, King Henry's power became nearly nonexistent. Without his supporters, he had no influence, in his desperation, he visited Gregory to seek forgiveness. However, he made Hennry wait in the snow for three days before he forgave him.
  • However, Pope Gregory and King Henry were unable to remain restful for long. After being excommunicated Henry angrily stormed the city of Rome in an attempt to force Gregory out of position. The siege worked and Pope Gregory was removed from the city of Rome.
  • Eventually, Pope Gregory and King Henry died, but the strife continued long after. In the year 1121, an agreement was formed allowing for the Church to have exact power over appointing bishops while also allowing non secular leaders to grant fiefs to bishops. This would allow them to bribe the bishops to their causes. But this agreement wasn't absolute as the conflict between Popes and Kings still existed.
