  • California was admitted as a free state.
  • Stricter Fugitive Slave law reinforced early one by making Northerners report anyone they suspected to be a fugitive.
  • The Compromise of 1850
  • The slave trade (not slavery) was banned in the Nation's capital.
  • The remainder of the Mexican Cession was split into Utah and New Mexico without mention of slavery.
  • Settled border disputes between Texas and New Mexico.
  • In 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe was published. She wrote this after witnessing a slave auction in the South. The book exposed the horror of slavery and turned much of the world against the South.
  • The Kansas Nebraska act admitted the states on the concept of popular sovereignty, allowing the citizens to choose whether slavery would be permitted or not. This led to Bleeding Kansas, a riot where both Pro and Anti Slavery people fought in a bloody riot. 
  • The Dred Scott decision denied Dred Scott, a black man who lived in a free state citizenship. It essentially signified that former enslaved people who now lived in free states were not guaranteed freedom.
  • In John Brown's raid, John Brown and his sons raided a weapons inventory in Virginia in order to incite a slave revolt. They were unsuccessful, and Brown was out to death. He was considered a terrorist in the South and became a martyr in the North.
  • In the election of 1860, republican Abraham Lincoln defeated 3 other candidates, only needing 40% of the electoral college. His election was a nightmare come true for the South, who believed slavery was under threat.
