- "Her father was fond of me and often invited me to spend time with him. He continually asked me to tell him the story of my life. I went through the account from the time I was a boy up to the very moment of his asking me to tell him the story."
- "In it I spoke of the most calamitous occurrences, of terrifying events concerning flood and battlefield, of hairsbreadth escapes from imminent death, of being captured by the insolent foe and sold into slavery, of my redemption from enslavement, and of my actions in the history of my travels. I spoke of vast caves and barren desserts, of rugged boulders and rocks and of hills whose tops reach to heaven. I was also urged to speak, as I went along, of the Anthropophagi who eat one another, and also of men whose heads grow beneath their soldiers. Desdemona would listen most closely to all these things, and when household matters would call her away she would, if possible, deal with them quickly and then come again and devour my tales with a hungry ear. When I observed this, I took a favorable time and gave her the chance to ask me to tell her the full story of my adventures. She had heard portions but had not been able to hear in full.
