  • Today's topic is on waves! We'll be mainly focusing on the two waves that are most important, mechanical and electromagnetic waves. I'll be mentioning their similarities and differences, as well as all the relationships between frequency, wavelength, energy, and amplitude of waves. Let's get started!

  • Mechanical waves and Electromagnetic (EM) waves have some ways they relate. For example, they both carry energy from one location to another. However, they cannot carry matters. Matter is a solid, liquid, or gas that changes forms. In order for mechanical waves to travel, they require some sort of matter to pass through. This prevents them from being able to travel through vacuums.

  • Unlike mechanical waves, electromagnetic waves do not require a medium to travel through. Because of this, EM waves are able to travel through space as light. The speed of light should never change, unless it is met with a medium. The EM spectrum includes (in order from least to greatest in energy) radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, UV rays, x rays, and gamma rays. Radio waves have the longest wavelengths, while gamma rays have the shortest wavelengths.

  • In an EM and visible light spectrum, they are listed from greatest to least in energy frequency. Frequency is the amount of wavelengths that are in one second (hz). Frequency and energy are directly related meaning that as one gets bigger or smaller, the other will do the same. However, wavelength and energy frequency are indirectly proportional. This means that as one gets bigger the other will get smaller.

  • Earlier, I mentioned the EM spectrum and listed them from least to greatest in energy. Now, we'll be talking about the visible light spectrum. The visible light spectrum can be found in between infrared and UV rays on the EM spectrum. The visible light spectrum goes like this - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Big, Indigo, Violet. Red has the longest wavelength with the least energy, while Violet has the shortest wavelength with the most amount of energy.

  • I think we're done for today! I hope you learned a lot from this lesson and put it to good use in the future! Good day!
