  • Act I. Scene iii. Lines 49-51
  • All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor!
  • All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!
  • All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis!
  • Act I. Scene IV. Lines 50-55
  • The prince of Cumberland! That is a stepOn which I must fall down, or else o'erleap,For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires;Let not light see my black and deep desires. The eye wink at the hand, yet let that beWhich the eye fears, when it is done, to see.
  • Act II. Scene iii. Lines 87-97
  • Who can be wise, amazed, temp'rate, and furious,Loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man.Th' expedition of my violent loveOutrun the pauser, reason. Here lay Duncan,His silver skin laced with his golden blood,And his gashed stabs looked like a breach in natureFor ruin’s wasteful entrance; there, the murderers,Steeped in the colors of their trade, their daggersUnmannerly breeched with gore. Who could refrain,That had a heart to love, and in that heartCourage to make ’s love known?
  • This scene uses foreshadowing when explaining the prophecy to Macbeth and Banquo. The three witches use foreshadowing because they tell Macbeth of future events that will happen peaking his interest in knowing more. This ties into fate vs free will because this was what Macbeth's fate/future was meant to be because these events later did happen.
  • Act III. Scene i. Lines 69-75
  • ...For them the gracious Duncan have I murdered;Put rancors in the vessel of my peaceOnly for them; and mine eternal jewelGiven to the common enemy of man,To make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings!Rather than so, come fate into the list,And champion me to th' utterance.
  • This aside from Macbeth ties into the meaning of fate vs free will. In this scene it shows where the state of his free will stands. After hearing the prophecy from the witches and hearing how Malcolm is named Prince of Cumberland his free will make him determined to overcome that and make himself become king by any means necessary.
  • Act IV. Scene i. Lines 81-83
  • During this scene a sense of imagery is used. Macbeth goes into detail of the way Duncan's body looks after he had killed him but of course leaving that part out to the others. This ties into fate vs free will because the murder of the two guards was of his own free will and he tires to justify it by using his angry as a reason for him doing it.
  • Act IV. Scene i. Lines 156-161
  • The castle of Macduff I will surprise,Seize upon Fife, give to th' edge o' th' swordHis wife, his babes, and all unfortunate soulsThat trace him in his line. No boasting like a fool. This deed I’ll do before this purpose cool.
  • Macbeth's soliloquy connects to the theme fate vs free will. In this scene Macbeth talk's about how Banquo being alive will become a problem because he also knows of the witches prophecy. By his own free will he thinks it is best that he gets rid of Banquo and Fleance to prevent Banquo from spreading the prophecy and to rid of his son ever becoming king even though that was involved in the witches prophecy.
  • This scene is both ironic and a sense of foreshadowing. It foreshadows Macbeth's alleged fate making him feel safe because he is told that he cannot be harmed by anyone who was born from women. Also, it becomes ironic that Macbeth that Macduff ends up not technically being born from a women. This ties into fate vs free will because the apparition explains Macbeth's fate and gets him to feel so safe that he shouldn't have to worry about anyone.
  • Be bloody, bold, and resolute. Laugh to scornThe power of man, for none of woman bornShall harm Macbeth.
  • This scene also uses foreshadowing from Macbeth. During the scene Macbeth foreshadows what he plans to do to Macduff's family and kingdom. This ties into fate vs free will because once again he makes this decision of his own free will. Mainly due to him going mad with power and not being able to stop himself from killing others because he has been keeping it going through the whole story.
