- In 1842 Manchester, studious Eliza Helsted's teaching career dreams are crushed when she is sent to work in the suffocating cotton mills to support her family.
- We've sold our house for food, please do you have any money to spare?
- I'm sorry, I would give you some if I could, but I don't have any money.
- The work is backbreaking and dangerous, but Eliza is encouraged by her new friend Jack Bringham. Her parents argue constantly about a mysterious Irish organisation called the Chartist.
- We're going to America!

- There is a rumour of a terrible strike for better treatment and pay for the mill hands. Eliza finds out that the Chartist is behind this after accidentally stumbling across one of their meetings.
- Eliza, the master says he'll talk to the librarian about this!

- When the opportunity comes, seize it!
- The strike has reached Manchester, and with no work or wages getting food becomes a daily struggle. As people's lives are being wrecked by poverty and sickness Eliza longs now more than ever to live in the country where her grandpa grew up.
- Peace and everyday life returns to Manchester as the strike leaves, but it made no difference as the Helsteds are still struggling for money. One day the Bringhams tells Eliza's family shocking news: they were leaving for America.
- The Bringhams leave along with their cousins, who gave their positions at another mill to the Helsteds. This mill is cleaner, kinder, and best of all in the country. Eliza has new hope for her teacher dreams when the master notices her passion.
