- Hey, this forest reminds me of what we're learning in biology: photosynthesis!
- Mrs. Ruback's class right? What a good teacher. I remember her teaching us the chemical formula for photosynthesis: 6 CO2 + 6 H2O → C6 H12 O6 + 6 O2.
- She also taught us that photosynthesis takes place in plants such as trees and in the plant cell organelle, chloroplasts.
- I also learned that the inputs of photosynthesis are water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight. Also, that the outputs are Oxygen and glucose.
- I also remember that the light reaction occurs in the thylakoid discs, where water (H20) is oxidized and oxygen (O2) is released. The electrons freed up from water are transfered to ATP and NADPH. The dark reaction occurs outside of the thylakoids in the stroma (aqueous fluid surrounding the stacks of thylakoids) and the cytoplasm, where the energy from ATP and NADPH are used to produce carbon dioxide (CO2). The products of this are sugar molecules and other organic molecules essential for cell function and metabolism.
- I'm so grateful that she taught us about photosynthesis because it is important to life on earth since it is the number one source of oxygen in the atmosphere and without it the carbon cycle could not occur causing oxygen-requiring life to die.
