Onwards to England people! The throne will be ours, but mostly mine! The Earth is flat!
Harald Hardrada's big blunders
It's hot here, my armour is wearing me down, let me just put it on the ship.
Harold Godwinson gathers men and marches from the South of England to the North
Those blasted Normans and stupid Norwegians! I thought William Duke of Normandy would attack first! Come people, join your King!
Harald Hardrada, hearing of Edward the Confessor's death, took his 300 ships and approximately 10,000 soldiers to the North of England to take the crown from Harold Godwinson.
The first (and last) encounter
The Norwegians left their armour on their ships and scattered themselves near York, a major city in England.. These were huge blunders from them because it made them easier to defeat.
Harald hardrada dies
Harold Godwinson thought that France would attack first but he realised that the Vikings have reached England so he gathers housecarls (highly trained professional Danish soldiers) and fyrd people (normal people who want to join the army) on the way to fight the Vikings. They take a short rest in Tadcaster on the way.
celebration... or is it?
Harold im coming!
The Anglo-Saxons reached Stamford Bridge to be met by a small regiment of troops. forming a shield wall After overwhelming them, they moved on to face the bulk of the Viking army. Legend has it that a Viking axeman killed 40 English soldiers alone until he was killed by somebody stabbing a pike up his groin.
Aw crud!
After a long and fierce battle, Harald Hardrada's army was no match for the 15,000 troops. The toll was costly for both sides and many housecarls were kiled. As the battle closed to an end, Harald Hardrada took an arrow in the throat and died. After their leader died, the Vikings got scared and lost the will to fight.
retreat!
after the huge battle of stamford bridge, Harold can rest his head knowing that his kingdom is safe. But meanwhile, on the shores of the south of England, 5 miles away from the town of Hastings, William of Normandy arrived.
