- Locusts descend on Umuofia, a great delicacy in Umuofia. Everyone sets out to catch them for roasting, drying and eating.

- Ogbuefi Ezeudu tells the bad news to Okonkwo that Oracle wants to kill Ikemefuna. He tells Okonkwo to take no part in the killing since the boy calls him "father."

- Okonkwo and other men in the village go with Ikemefuna to the forest. Ikemefuna feels safe when he walks near Okonkwo.
- One of the men strikes Ikemefuna with his machete. Ikemefuna cries and runs towards Okonkwo. Okonkwo is afraid to appear weak so he kill Ikemefuna with his machete.
