  • The British get word that there are weapons being held by colonial militia forces in Concord. They decide to march there to get the weapons and capture Sam Adams and John Hancock, patriot rebels.

  • On April 18th, 1775 a member of the Sons of Liberty learned the British plan and sent Paul Revere and William Dawes to alert the residents of Lexington and Concord.
  • You guys will warn the colonists the British are coming.

  • Dawes and Revere rode along the countryside warning colonists. They went separate ways in case one got caught. The myth is that he yelled," The British are coming." Revere warned them quietly instead.
  • Revere, I will ride this way along the Boston Neck Peninsula and you go a separate route in case we get caught

  • Dawes and Revere met up in Lexington and persuaded Sam Adams and John Hancock to flee. On the way they met Samuel Prescott who was also warning colonists. Revere was captured by a British patrol. Dawes was thrown off his horse and forced to walk back to Lexington.

  • Patriots were instructed to look at the steeple of Boston's North Church. If there was one lantern hanging that meant the British were coming by land and two meant they were coming by sea.

  • Word quickly spread from town to town and minutemen prepared to confront and stop the British from getting to Concord! Minutemen were called that because they could be ready to fight very quickly.

  • At dawn, April 19th, 1775 700 British troops arrived in Lexington met by 77 minutemen gathered on the town green to stop the British advance to Concord.

  • After being ordered to disperse a shot rang out. To this day no one actually knows what side shot first. About 15 minutes later the fight was done. The colonists were quickly overwhelmed and retreated. Eight patriots were dead and around 10 were wounded. Only one redcoat was hurt

  • The British continued to march to Concord in search of weapons stashed by the patriots.

  • Hundreds of minutemen rushed to where the British were. The British shot first but fell back

  • After searching Concord for almost four hours the British decided to return to Boston. Yet by that time almost 2000 minutemen had descended into the area. At first the minutemen just followed but fighting started soon after.

  • The minutemen were firing at the British from behind trees, stone walls, and houses. Before long there were British troops abandoning weapons to retreat faster. The bright red uniforms of the British made them easy targets.

  • When the British reached Lexington and had reinforcements that didn't stop the colonist's attack. The British retreated to Boston.

  • The minutemen killed or wounded around 250 Readcoats compared to around 90 on their side killed or wounded by the British.

  • The battles of Lexington and Concord marked the beginning of the American Revolution. The colonists gained more confidence in pursuing their fight for independence. The opening shot of these battles became known as the shot heard 'round the world.
