- Welcome Dr Elixir, from the last broadcast we were told there will be a qualitative research study that will be done to elicit the public’s perceptions regarding vaccines, as this is the most likely route medical specialists will need to follow to provide passive immunity and thus decrease disease severity should someone be infected. How exactly is this going to be carried out?
- In qualitative research, there are different ways of conducting research- that is, different study designs. There is a Narrative approach, which uses people’s stories -called field texts; Phenomenology, which tries to understand the core of a problem by looking at the views of the people who have experienced it; Ethnography- going into the participant’s natural setting and observing them; Grounded theory looks at deriving new theories based on collection and analysis of real-world data, and lastly the Case Study.

- That is quite an array of study designs, which of these will the investigating team use to collect the required data?
- The phenomenological approach will best answer our question because it seeks to gain insight into a universal feeling- we want to know people’s perceptions which can be elicited via in-depth interviews. Bias is reduced by using tools like bracketing, intuiting, analyzing and describing. Further information sessions are planned to explain our data collection, analysis, and results with the general public so that everyone is informed.
