- Bertie's father tells him that he is old enough to go to school and that he agreed to sell the lion to a Frenchman. But bertie doesn't agree. This part is very important as it shows sadness and grief in bertie's life as he faces problems.
- Bertie chases the lion away by scaring him with a gunshot so the lion doesn't have to "be behind bars". But he promises the lion that he will never forget him...This part is important because the lion really goes away from him.
- The lion cub returns after a while, starving and tired. Bertie and his parents help the cub and Bertie finally agrees to sell the lion to the Frenchman, because the Frenchman reassured him that the lion would be safe. This part is crucial because the lion is finally going to the circus.
- A few years later, Millie (the old lady) meets Bertie, Because Bertie ran away from his school since it was horrible. He retrieves Millie's kite from the tree and starts telling her about how he ran away and that his mom died. They become good friends. This is important because it shows that bertie is making new friends.
- A few years later, they need to go their separate ways, to college. Bertie gives Millie a box kite to remember him by, and they go their separate ways. This part is important because of their parting, and the characters would be leaving each other for the first time.
- They kept in touch by sending letters to each other. This is important because the characters are happy and it shows that they are still friends.
