- "My dear Fortunato, i'm so happy to see you," Montressor said, "How remarkably well you are looking today! For I have a pipe of Amontillado to share." Montressor continued.
- "Luchesi can't tell Amontillado from Sherry." I rudely interrupeted, "I will go to your vaults!" I exclamed.
- "I'm on my way to Luchesi," Montressor said, "he'll confirm it for-"
- "How long have you had that cough?" Montressor questioned, "Come, we will go back; your health is precious."
- "Enough," I demanded, "the cough is mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die from a cough. "
- "True-True," Montressor replied, "I had no intention of alarming you unnecessarily. A draught of this Medoc will defend us from the damps."
