  • Parvana is at the market, sitting on a mat while her father sells some of their belongings. Because most people are uneducated, Parvana's father also reads and writes letters. Parvana accompany her father to the market since he needs someone to lean on after losing his leg in a bombing.
  • Chapter 4
  • Mother and Nooria are cleaning again when Parvana returns home because they have nothing else to do. While the family is eating, the Taliban arrives and arrests the father for being a well-educated man who studied in England. Parvana screams at the Taliban, pleading for them to release her father.
  • Chapter 5
  • The next day, mother and Parvana go to the prison to get their father back, and the mother takes out a photo of him and shows it to the guards, but they beat her and she returns home. They had to walk because they didn't have a male companion and so couldn't board the train.
  • Chapter 6
  • After they returned from prison, Nooria and Maryam took care of them. Mother became depressed, so Parvana went to the market to fetch some food. Because they were out of food, Parvana was the only one who could go to the market because Maryam and Ali were too young, and Nooria and her mother couldn't leave the house without a burqa. They can't see clearly because of the burqa
  • When Parvana walked to the market, she first walked to the naan stall and then to the fruit booth when a Talib approached her. The Talib was arguing with Parvana because she was a woman and did not wear a burqa.
  • Parvana fled as fast as she could away from the Talib and she ran into Mrs. Weera. She is a close family friend. Mrs. Weera was brought home by Parvana and her mother planned a scheme to disguise Parvana as a male.
