The lord Brahma gifted Mahishasura immortality under the condition that only a woman can defeat him.
With the blessing of immortality, Mahishasura attackted the trilok- earth, heaven and hell. The gods were helpless as only a woman can defeat him.
To defeat him, Lord Vishu created a woman to defeat him. It is believed that Goddess Durga is the reincarnation of Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva.
After Goddess Durga was created she fought with Mahishasura for 15 long days. This fight affected the trilok- Earth, Heaven and Hell.
Being smart, Mahishasura kept changing his form to confuse Goddess Durga. When he took the form of a Buffalo, Goddess Durga peirced him with her 'trishul'(a forked weapon) and Mahishasura was finally killed.
On each day of Navratri, different avatars of Goddess Durga are worshiped.
