- NEWTON'S CANNON Newton's cannon was a thought experiment devised by Sir Isaac Newton. He imagined firing a cannonball at different speeds from velocities. Whether the cannonball stayed in orbit or not depends on the initial velocity.
- The velocity is equal to the orbital velocity. The cannonball stays in orbit.
- The velocity is lower than the orbital velocity. The cannonball falls to Earth.
- The velocity is higher than the orbital velocity. The cannonball escapes Earth.
