My First Surgery

- I was only 13 years old when I had hip surgery. Yes, I dislocated and fractured a hip! Over the course of three months I went from walking normally to limping and then not being able to walk without extreme pain.
- In any moment nurses are going to start putting me the sedatives. I'm scared to death and my hands are sweating and shaking. Thank god my grandma was there to comfort me.
- I look at my grandma nervously and tell her "I'm nervous I don't want this".
- She stands up and comes closer to me gives me a comforting smile and says "everything's going to be ok".
- A nurse comes in and puts in the first dose of sedative. After a minute or two it becomes difficult for me to breathe it felt as if someone was pushing down on my chest. I'm getting more nervous and anxious. While I feel like it gets worse my grandma is trying for me to calm down and let the sedative start working.
- I'm covering my face and getting desperate for not being able to breath right and tell my grandma " I'm lightheaded I can't breathe right".
- She comes closer and tells me " Melany, you have to calm down you won't feel better until you relax, you are fighting against the sedative that's supposed to calm you down
- "This is going to happen in no time everything is gonna go great, come on count to ten for me you can do it".
- After a couple of hours had passed by a nurse transferred me to another room to change and get prepared to go to the operating room once I was ready we went to the operating room and by know I couldn't hold the tears anymore. Just by the sight of all those machines and other doctors and nurses my breathing hitched. But the doctor tried comforting and helping me.
- After following the doctors orders and closing my eyes I started to fade away in a deep sleep.
- " ok, 1...2...3...4...5...." by 5 I close my eyes feeling tired and fall asleep.
- I sure was terrified that day but without the surgery I couldn't have gotten better. This experience helped me be more careful and aware of my surroundings. I'll never forget those feelings of fear but sure will remember the lesson this experience taught me. Thanks to this surgery and time I was no longer limping or in pain.
