QUOTE FROM ONE CRAZY SUMMER by Rita Williams-Garcia
This quote is poignant because it speaks to the fact that Black people were vastly under-represented in the media and other spaces (and still are). Delphine remarks that there were so few people that looked like her and her sisters on T.V. that they made a game out of counting them and keeping track of the amount of lines they had. It illustrates how important it is to feel represented in all aspects of society.
JET
"The Mike Douglas Show wasn't the only place to find [Black] people on television. Each week, Jet magazine pointed out all the shows with [Black] people. My sisters and I became expert counters. We had it down to a science."
