- Act 1 Scene 4: Macbeth and Banquo, along with Ross and Angus, join the rest of Duncan's party. Duncan thanks them both for their part in the battle and announces that his eldest son, Malcolm, will inherit the throne from him when he dies.
- We will establish our estate uponOur eldest, Malcolm, whom we name hereafter'The Prince of Cumberland': which honour mustNot unaccompanied invest him only,But signs of nobleness, like stars, shall shineOn all deservers.
- Act 1 Scene 6: Duncan praises the castle's pleasant environment, and he thanks Lady Macbeth, who has emerged to greet him, for her hospitality. She replies that it is her duty to be hospitable since she and her husband owe so much to their king.
- Give me your hand: Conduct me to mine host. We love him highly, And shall continue our graces towards him. By your leave, hostess.
- Act 1 Scene 7: Alone, Macbeth ponders the deed that he is about to perform. He is aware of the powerful reasons for murdering the king, but is nagged by self-doubt arising from his fear of retribution both in heaven and on earth and by his likely loss of reputation.
- But screw your courage to the sticking place,And we'll not fail.
