- This was a clever choice of Valasquez, for Cortes was a skilled horseman and soldier. He was a great fit for the position. Cortes sent messages around Cuba in what ended up being a successful attempt to get men to join him. Valasquez would later regret this decision, as he sent Messengers with orders to arrest Cortes, but it was unseccessful and Cortes sailed to Havana, and then to Yucatán with 11 ships and 608 men.
- I choose you, Hernan Cortes to lead the expedition to Yucatan and Mexico.
- Cortes and his men landed at Tabasco, North of the Yucatán Peninsula where they met the unexpectedly armed Tabascoans. They were faced with thousands of armed men. When Cortés sent 10 men on horseback to charge into the crowd, the Tabascoans fled in fear of the unfamiliar creatures. They thought that the horse and man were one. That was the end of the battle.
- The day after the Tabascoan lords came to recompense with Cortés. As gifts, they brought several women. One of them was called Malinche; she was young and very beautiful. Soon she would become Cortés' mistress after he realised how intelligent she was. She was born in the Aztec empire but learned the Maya language in Tabasco. They christened her 'Dona Marina'.
