Mann was motivated to change the school system for the better. Allowing every boy or girl. No matter the race to get a free and effective education.
Beginning of Horace Mann
1837 - Mann was elected as the secretary of the Massachusetts board of education
Mann believed that in order to have social harmony there needed to be better education given for everyone.

He believed that there needed to be more regulations on teachers. That every teacher should have to go through immense training and preparation
States picked up on these ideas. Mann's ideas quickly started spreading out of just Massachusetts. And universal schooling seemed commonly agreed upon
This sounds interesting.
Funds for everyones education was now backed up by taxes.
Kids and teens are required to go to school. No matter the gender or race.
The Schooling we know today
In 1870, schools were changed forever the way that we know them now. Mostly thanks to Mann.
Teaching expectations are a lot higher. Teachers are required at least 4 years of school!
