- By dose 3, most of the bacteria in Addie's body were now resistant, because the antibiotics were killing the non-resistant bacteria at a faster rate than the resistant bacteria, allowing the resistant bacteria to grow uncontrollably.

- At this point, the bacteria in Addie's body were fully resistant to the antibiotic and it was clear that the antibiotic was not going to win against the bacteria. The doctors then gave Addie a different antibiotic, but the same thing happened, and the bacteria became resistant again and were growing out of control.
- After the doctors had tried all the antibiotics, and the Stenotrophomonas became resistant to all of them, the Stenotrophomonas bacteria was pan-resistant. This means that the bacteria were resistant to every antibiotic .
