- Throughout Shakespeare's Othello, the theme of gender is explored through numerous characters, who either defy or surrender to societal expectations. After experiencing heartbreak, Roderigo gets emotional, threatening to kill himself.According to Elizabethan views, men should not show emotion, which is depicted by Iago's harsh response, in which he accuses Roderigo of acting non-masculine, and mocks his suicidal thoughts.While men are still confined to many of these limited expectations today, many are opening up to the thought of men showing their feelings. In fact, public add campaigns and other promotional materials have been created to defy these norms, an encourage them to express their feelings in a healthy manner. The scene depicted showcases a man in therapy for a similar situation to that of Rodrigo's, which has become an accepted manner for men to communicate their feelings.
