A letter was sent by 13 Maori chiefs from the Bay of Islands to King William IV. It was to seek protection against the French.
1835
James Busby Arrives in NZ, and was appointed British Resident. He was described 'warship without guns' due to the fact he had no army or police force to protect him.
He Whakaputanga
United Tribes Flags was Chosen. It was recognized#160;by the British King and became a national flag for ships from New Zealand.
1839
He Whakaputanga Declared.
