- The Story cousins' first obstacle is Donald Camden. He invites Jonah, Aubrey, and Milly to lunch, where he tells them of a new job opportunity working on the set of a known movie series. Milly knows that Donald is trying to get rid of them and all three decide to stay.
- The cousins eventually find out that the woman they keep meeting with is not their grandmother. Mildred died 25 years ago but her assistant Theresa posed as her. Theresa's sister posed as Theresa and Donald Camden helped because they gave him money. The three worked together to try to stop the cousins from uncovering the truth.
- The Summer Gala earlier in the book, is a scene that shows several different conflicts. When Anders arrives he reveals the truth and Donald get angry at the cousins for not telling him before. Anders is angry with Donald because 'his mom' disappeared before he could talk to her. As Jonah listens to the conversation, he gets angry and blows up at Anders.
