- One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. For the first piece of evidence, the people of Maple Street start yelling and accusing Les Goodman of working with aliens after his car turns on by itself. Even though he was nowhere near his car, everyone save Steve turns on Goodman. This evidence shows how quickly the people went from allies to enemies. Secondly, Charlie shoots Pete Van Horn without being able to see him. Charlie's act explains how he would end a friend's life rather than put himself in danger. Ending us off, wrapping up the story, one of the aliens states, "They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find... and it's themselves." The aliens prove that, instead of harming the humans, they simply turn the power off and watch as the humans destroy themselves out of fear and suspicion. To summarize, many events in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" point to the same theme: mankind is its own worst enemy.
