Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei was an astronomer, mathematician, physicist, and engineer from Italy. One of his major discoveries is that there are four moons around Jupiter. He also invented the telescope that we are familiar with today.
When he was younger, Galileo studied medicine at the University of Pisa. He realized that he had more knowledge in the field of mathematics and left the university to become a professor of mathematics at the University of Padua.

In regards to Galileo being an engineer, he modeled and worked with his own compasses, thermoscopes, microscopes, and telescopes. These instruments and their usage are very common today, and it was part of Galileo's major contributions.
Ultimately, Galileo has made many discoveries and inventions that can still apply to an astronomer today and even almost any student. His discovery of the four moons around Jupiter helps astronomers study space in this generation.
