  • Jamie catches her eye on a man walking down the street. His name is Joe Starks, and he is sharply dressed and a handsome man. She starts flirting with him and he tells her about all of his great ambitions. He tells her about his big dreams and how he would spoil her and treat her like a princess. Janies hope's for love start coming true again.
  • Ah'm uh man wid principles. You ain't never snowed what it was to be treated lak a lady and Ah wants to be de one tuh show yuh.
  • You mean dat, Joe?
  • When Janie was sixteen years old, she found joy in sitting under a blossoming pear tree. One day, she decided to kiss a boy named Johnny Taylor. Nanny catches Janie and Johnny kissing, and decided that Janie needed to be married off in order to give her a secure living way of life. Nanny told Janie that black women are "the mules of the world" and she didn't want Janie to be a mule.
  • Janie, youse got yo womanhood on yuh. So Ah mout ez well tell yuh whut Ah been savin' up for uh spell. Ah wants to see you married right away.
  • Two months after her marriage with Logan Killicks, Janie goes to Nanny and told her that she still doesn't love Logan. Nanny tells Janie that she doesn't appreciate all that Logan can give to her and that she isn't looking for the right qualities in a man. After Janie leaves, Nanny prays to God telling him that she has done the best she could. She dies a few months later and Janie still has no love for Logan.
  • I'm afraid I will never love Logan. It's been two months after our marriage, and I thought that by now I would develop a love for him but I don't. 
  • You clearly don't appreciate Logans large amount of wealth and great social status. If you don't appreciate him you can go. In time, you will develop feelings for Logan.
