- I have had to overcome many more adversities since then such as racism, poverty and injustice in my life.
- I wasn't born into the Apartheid but I had to witness it the introduction of it into my country and watch as millions of people were forced out of their homes and into segregated neighbourhoods.
- The Apartheid (1948 to 1994) in South Africa was the racial segregation under the all-white government of South Africa which dictated that non-white South Africans (a majority of the population) were required to live in separate areas from whites and use separate public facilities, and contact between the two groups .
- She stuck by me and stood up for me when I couldn't stand up for myself. She also educated the people of South- Africa about how wrong it was that I had been imprisoned.
- It was also the support of my wife at the time, Winnie Mandela and the people of South Africa that greatly assisted me during that time in prison.
- Ahmed Kathrada, Denis Goldburg and Mlangeni also stood by me and were ready to sacrifice their lives to support freedom and racial equality.
- It was my iron will and sense of dignity that helped me to survive 27 years in prison. I also drew strength from the knowledge that I was part of a great humanity.
- They understood that I had been imprisoned unfairly and that gave me the mental courage to keep fighting.
