Mia, Leah, Michael, and Ellie. Can you tell me one social issue and three central ideas in the book, Houdini the Elusive American?
You can do and believe anything you want. (Central Idea)
In his entire life, Houdini had to escape. (Central Idea)
Leah
Elie
Mia
Many people were outcasts in society. (Social Issue)
It takes time for people to recognize you. (Central Idea).
Based on the topics that your classmates said, can you tell me if they are major or minor? Leor, David, Noah, and Mikayla, can you answer this question?
The topic that Michael said major because the book is based on people not fitting in and being different. Outcasts lead to new activity/something different so I think that this book really supports this social issue.
The topic that Mia said is minor because even though it helps the story progress a little, it isn’t what the story is really about.
The topic that Leah said is minor because this only appears a few times in the book and it isn’t as important as other central ideas.
The topic that Ellie said major because this happens throughout the book and shows his mindset.
What's the best evidence across the novel that supports the central idea of In his entire life, Houdini had to escape.? Can Chase, Samantha, and Kinsey answer this question?
Page 8 “The mourning, the hardship, the hunger, the taint of failure were apparantly too much for Ehrich [Harry] to bear. He ran away.”
Pg. 38 “ But when he reappeared within minutes, unbound andreclothed, degradation turned to triumph.”
Page 117 “The whole point is escape. … A week later,Houdini wriggles and thrashes his way to safety so that he can rescue Eve, the damsel in distress- at which point the cycle beigns again.
