- Hey, Son, Do you want to learn about the New York colony? It would be fun to learn since we will take a trip there soon.
- Sure, Dad
- In 1625, Peter Minuit of the Dutch West India Company bought land from local Indians. Then in 1644, the Dutch surrendered the colony to the English.
- Was there a gory war?
- I didn't live back then, Son. I read, though, the Dutch surrendered. Citizens were unwilling to fight.
- Oh, what else do you know about New York,Dad?
- In 1664, King James let the people govern themselves. In 1685, New York became a royal colony. Then, the king ruled.
- I would like to live back then when the people ruled.
- They had natural resources like farm land, coal, furs, timber and iron. It was known as for its major crop: wheat. The colony exported iron and manufactured kitchen items such as kettles. Here's a picture of a kettle.
- People could worship the way the wanted to. Catholics, Jews, Lutherans, and Quakers worshipped in the colony.
