- When Olson got into the Career Trainee program, he felt lucky to be there.He was a part of the Cold War generation who believed that communism wascontradictory to the freedoms and values that America represented.
- Olson wasone of three individuals selected for the CKTAW program. By this time, theMoscow Station had conducted their initial surveillance, and before he began histraining, Olson was read in on the mission.
- A contractor had built a mock-up of the manhole complex at a CIA trainingfacility known as the Farm, and day after day, Olson and his colleagues practicedlifting the lid and slipping inside undetected. OTS had made a special grapplingtool that would allow them to quickly remove the lid; however, the instructorswere fond of putting obstacles in their way in order to see how they wouldrespond. Olson was intimidated, but he persevered. His fellow cadets had shownup on the first day sporting combat pants and military-style gear, while Olsonhad on a pair of jeans and sneakers, knowing full well that a paramilitarydemeanor was not going to work.
