- The soldier comes for water.
- May I have a drink of water?
- The Yanks are repairing the railroad.
- Any news from the front?
- Yes sir!
- The soldier is actually the enemy.
- Can't believe he actually fell for that.
- Farquhar's death penalty.
- Please let me go!
- You did this to yourself!
- Stop your whining!
- One day, while Peyton Farquhar and his wife were sitting on a bench outside, enjoying the weather, a soldier dressed in grey came up to them and asked for a drink of water. While his wife went to fetch the water, Farquhar asked the soldier about the war. Farquhar asked if there was a way to burn the bridge and the soldier explained to him a way to do it but that he could also be hanged for doing it.
- Farquhar's "death".
- Where did he go?
- And there he goes!
- Later in the night as the Farquar's slept soundly, the man whom they trusted had turned out to be a Federal scout and he was going the same way he had come from. The "soldier" knew Farquhar's whole plan.
- He tries to escape.

- I have to escape but my neck is hurting so bad!
- .
- Since Farquhar was caught by the soldier he was to be hanged for attempting to burn down the bridge so that the Union wouldn't be able to cross. He was placed at the center of the bridge while two soldiers are at each end keeping watch. When the soldiers are to step off of the plank that he is centered on, he will be hanged.
- Farquhar makes it "home".
- I just have to get home.
- As Farquhar stood there, pondering his fate, he began to think of his family. How his wife must be feeling. He also thought of ways to escape this predicament. Then it happened. The soldiers moved out of the way and he had fallen into the center of the bridge into the water.
- He ends up slipping through the noose that was around his neck and began to swim away. Bullets began flying past him when they saw him swimming away. Due to the noose being so tight his neck was hurting so bad and he was running out of breath. He soon made it to the shore where he began to run.

- Farquhar made his way through the forest and through the city till he finally reached home. Just as he was about to run into his wife's arms he felt the tightness of a rope around his neck and the pain that it prompted. It was then realized that his escaping was just his imagination to elude the fact that he was to be hanged.
- My wife!
- Peyton!
