- The story began in southern Sudan in 1985 when main character Salva Dut was in his school in the classroom.

- The war in Sudan started two years ago. During the lesson gunshots rang outside of the schoolhouse, and Salva had to ran away from his village, leaving his family behind.

- Salva became a refugee and to be safe he had to walk away from the war with other people to the refugee camp . His journey was difficult and dangerous.
- Salva spent six years in the camp in Ethiopia and then five years in the camp in Kenya. His life in the camp was dull and empty. He lost his family and he felt hopeless, until one day he found out that he was chosen to go to America.

- Salva moved to Rochester, New York and started a new life with a new family. He went to college there and was receiving education.
- After many years, he was able to return to Sudan and see his family. Later on he began nonprofit organization "Water for Sudan" and brought fresh water to the thousands of people there.
