- Mattie Cook is a 14 years old girl living with her mother, grandpa, a former Military man, a cat, and a parrot. Eliza, a freed black women, is their cook.

- One day, the serving girl, Polly, didn't come for work and died because of fever. Soon, more cases of the fever came up and people were under the horror of the epidemic. Unfortunately, Mattie's mother, Lucille, become one of the patients.

- Doctors came trying to cure her by drain her blood . During the illness, Lucille told Mattie to escape the the country and go somewhere safe without the fever

- Mattie and her grandpa set off with a wagon and a farmer family to a place of safety. However, they were stopped by the town guards because they thought they were also fever patients and they were forced to give up the journey.
- Stuck in the middle of nowhere, Mattie's grandpa was ill (Not the fever). Trying to take care of him, Mattie unfortunately got the fever. She started to feel dizzy, and fainted.
- they woke up in a hospital ran by Dr. Devese and other doctors who don't believe in bleeding their patient but instead, let them have rest and food.

- After they had recovered, they went back to their coffeehouse and found that its been robbed. Mattie does her best to make food for them two. One night, the robbers came again, Mattie's grandpa was injured by the robbers and died in front of Mattie's eyes.

- Mattie didn't know where to go, she wondered around the city and surprisingly found her coffeehouse cook, Eliza and a orphan called Nell.

- Eliza took them back to her brother, Joseph's house, where Mattie met Joseph, his twin kids, and Smith. Mattie helped them with their works taking care of fever patients

- Unfortunately, Nell, the orphan and the twin got sick due to the hot temperature at Joseph's place. They moved back to Mattie's coffee house where the children's fever got cured by their care.
- Mattie asked Eliza to be her business partner and she agreed. Eliza made a big Thanksgiving feast for them
- At last, Mattie's mother finally returned, and all the mess came back to normal again.
