- Exposition: The setting is in the future where there is no more natural death. Death now is eliminated and the “Thunderhead” controls the society. The main characters include Scythe Faraday, Citra, and Rowan. The conflict is between the two sides in society. These include whether or not Scythes should be gleaning people. 
- Rising Action: Scythe Faraday walks into Citra's home unexpectedly.  Citra was shocked to see him in her home and was scared that one of her family members was going to be gleaned. 
- Rising Action: After the rising action, Rowan is introduced into the story and fights against a glean. Once this is over he makes him and Citra meet each other at an Opera. Then in this scene, Rowan and Citra learn they are competing against each other to be the next Scythe. 
- Climax:  Citra and Rowan have to fight for their test to become a Scythe. During the fight, however, Rowan breaks Citras neck so he can be disqualified. 
- Falling Action:  Rowan went to his first mass gleaning with Scythe Goddard and realized that the way Scythe Goddard gleans people is not the right way. He also realizes that Scythe Goddard enjoys when he gleans people which is not what a Scythe is supposed to love about the job. 
- Resolution: Citra has announced the winner and is now considered a Scythe. She chose her name be Scythe Anastasia. Citra has decided that it is till to kill Rowan but before she could she punches him in the face and the blood from that lands on the immunity ring, granting him immunity.  Rowan then crawls and finally escapes.
