  • As the magnesium starts to burn, it emits an intense,bright white light. The magnesium reacts with the oxygen and forms a white powdery substance, which is magnesium oxide. This white ash is the result of the chemical reaction. The magnesium may appear to sparkle and give of sparks.When burning magnesium, the total mass before and after the reaction stays the same. This demonstrates the law of conservation of mass, which says that mass is neither created or destroyed in a chemical reaction, only rearranged.
  • Burning Magnesium in open air and in a crucible share some similarities in both scenarios, the magnesium has a chemical reaction with oxygen, making magnesium oxide and the release of intense, bright white light.
