Monsieur Valmondé is very shocked. He sees a little toddler outside his house asleep. She was crying "Dada" and was mysteriously left there. He takes her in as one of his own. The little girl is named Desiree.
The baby is not white. You are not white.
What?!!
When Desiree grows older, she gets finds Armand and marries him. Armand and his father came back to Louisiana from Paris after his mother died there.
Desiree eventually has a baby with Armand. Madame Valmondé comes to visit Desiree and the baby. Madame cannot believe how much the child has changed.
To: Armand
Desiree senses something is wrong. Armand starts acting strange and avoids Desiree and the baby. A little boy starts fanning her child and she is very confused. Armand says that the baby is not actually white and neither is she.
Desiree goes and asks her mother for help and she tells her to come stay at the Valmondé. Armand tells her to go. She takes her baby and leaves but she does not take the path to her mother's house. Armand's deceased mother reveals in a letter he finds that she was a slave.
The theme for the story "Desiree's Baby" is to never judge someone on their looks or color of their skin. Armand bases the worth of a person based on their color or gender. After finding out his child is colored, he does not want Desiree or the child.
