- The conflict is that Louise feels happy and relieved that her husband is dead, but her excitement and joy is dampened by her sense of obligation to feel sad, mournful, and miserable because her husband is dead.
- FALLING ACTION
- Richards, the friend of Louise's husband, saw Louise's husband's name, Brently, on the list of those killed in a railroad accident.
- RESOLUTION
- Although grieving, Louise realizes that she is now free from a marriage that oppressed her, even if their marriage wasn't bad and her husband was kind.
- After Mrs. Mallard comes to the conclusion that she is now free to live a happy life, Josephine and her walk down, just as Mr. Mallard, unharmed by the tragic accident, comes through the door.
