- I am sorry Romans, but I will not give you Hannibal or the city of Saguntum.
- Give us Hannibal right now for breaking the Ebro Treaty or else this will be an act of war.
- We cannot wait in Spain for Rome to attack us, we must attack them first!
- Get them! This is our land now. Italy will be mine and Rome will lose this war!
- Run!!! We cannot fight them, they have elephants!
- In 219 BCE, Hannibal broke the Ebro Treaty that stated the Ebro River was the boundary between Carthage and Rome in Spain. He broke the treaty by sieging the city of Saguntum. In doing so, the Roman Senate gave two options to the Carthaginian army which was either to give Hannibal to them to pay for his crimes or if they do not give Hannibal up, then Hannibal's actions will be considered as a declaration of war.
- Quickly, take their food so they will not have any more supplies for the war!
- Instead of Hannibal waiting in Spain for the Roman forces to arrive, he leaves his headquarters and marches through the Alpine mountains to surprise and invade Italy. In doing so, the consul Publius Cornelius Scipio fails to stop Hannibal from crossing the mountains, and Hannibal successfully invades Italy.
- Surrender Hannibal! It is too late, we have taken over your homeland and there is no way else to go!
- I, Hannibal admit defeat.
- Hannibal was recognized as a great leader that devastated Roman forces in every single battle he was in. He used elephants for the first time against the Romans and outmaneuvered them. Rome could not stop the great force that was Hannibal.
- Not only will you pay for what you have done Carthaginians, but you are forbidden to ever have a large army or navy!
- As Hannibal was tearing down the farm lands in Italy, the Roman army quickly noticed that he was outrunning his supply. Thus, the Roman army quickly traveled to Africa by sea in order to cut off their supply so they will not be able to continue. In doing so they will be forced to retreat.
- After Hannibal receives news that the Romans have attacked Africa, he quickly tries to return to defend his home base but quickly realizes that it is too late. Therefore, Hannibal is quickly defeated in the Battle of Zama which is the only battle that he has ever lost.
- After the Carthaginians lose at the Battle of Zama, they discuss the Terms of Peace in 201 that marks the end of the second Punic War. The effects of the loss of the Carthaginian army were that they were forbidden to ever have a large army or navy, forced to pay a huge debt to the Roman army, and give up their foreign colonies that were located in Spain.
