Maria Clara was introduced by the latter's wife to young Spaniard by the name Linares de Espadana, who happened to be a god son of Padre Damaso's brother-in-law. Maria Clara refused the young Spaniard, despite the endorsement of Padre Damaso, because she loved Ibarra.
