- Attempt at Compromise
- I believe we should keep slavery below the 36 30 line.
- No. There is no saving the Union anyways.
- Lincoln won the election by a lot even though he wasn't on most of the southern ballots. He won 180 out of 303 electoral votes and came in first place at 40% of the popular vote.
- The Confederacy
- We should secede and become the "Confederate states of America"
- Sounds good to me!
- Lincoln and the Republicans promised to leave slavery alone where it existed but people in the south feared that the republicans would take away their rights. The south also left the Union after South Carolina held a convention in which people voted them out of it.
- Reactions to Secession
- We should demolish the Union if the only thing keeping it together is Compromising slavery.
- NO. We need it for our freedom
- After the south leaves the union the Senator of Kentucky proposed amendments that would keep slavery below the 30'36 degree line. The south eventually rejected these amendments because they believed that nothing could save the union.
- Presidential Responses
- Since i am president, seceding is not allowed. We are a country and countries do not split.
- More of the Southern stated decided to secede the Union and become the "Confederate States of America. They used the Fugitive Slave Act as their constitution.
- Most of the southerners celebrated secession while others feared it. Some of the northerners suggested to destroy the union if the only thing keeping it up was compromising on slavery but the other half of the southerners declared it to stay for freedom.
- Once Lincoln was president he said that secession wasn't allowed and pleaded the people of the south by saying that as a country they should not split.
