- Maya Naido, an eleven-year old South African girl living in town of Johannesburg, was helping her mother clear up her old boxes
- Mummy, look I found a book. It has pictures of a young boy. Who is he?
- His name is Hector Pieterson. He was shot by the police.
- Maya was shocked!
- BUT WHY MUMMY !!
- Maya, South Africa was earlier was governed by Apartheid laws
- Mummy but what is Apartheid?
- Apartheid means separation on the basis of race. African people were divided on the basis of different races. They were not allowed to mingle with anyone or not even use common facilities.
- Is this all true mummy! I am not able to believe this
- Yes Maya, even ambulance were meant for whites. Non-whites were not allowed to vote. Best land were for whites.
- What was the case of Hector Pieterson? why police shot him mummy!
- Hector and other school students were forced to learn Arikaans language that was spoken by whites. However they wanted to learn Zulu, their own language.
- Maya was very upset listening to this lifestory.

- They started protesting against it. Police handled the protesters very violently. One of their bullets killed Hector
