  • THE "NEW SOUTH ERA"
  • Segregation Against African Americans in the South
  • VOTE
  • BLACKS MUST TAKE LITERACY TEST BEFORE VOTING

  • COLORED
  • By: Aarsheya Gunjal
  • Black citizens would have to complete a literacy test in order to vote. They were given a limit of 10 minutes to complete this test and they couldn't get problems wrong. If any of these rules were broken, they would not be allowed to vote. They also had to pay "poll taxes" or money to vote in some states, something that not many of the African Americans had to spare at the time due to segregation in the workplace as well.
  • WE SERVE WHITES ONLY
  • Bathrooms and water fountains were also segregated, and the facilities for whites were always at a higher quality than the ones for blacks
  • Transportation was segregated too. African Americans would have to give up their seats to whites if they were sitting in the front. They had to move to the back of the bus which was hot and uncomfortable. If they didn't, they would be arrested and/or kicked off of the bus. If the bus was full and a white passenger needed a seat, African Americans had to give them their seat and get off of the bus.
  • Restaurants could only either serve blacks, or only whites. There was no intermingling of the races in these public services.
  • Schools were segregated - there were schools for whites and separate ones for blacks. White schools were cleaner while black schools were in poor condition due to a lack of acknowledgment to their situation.
