- Once upon a time, there lived a semi-barbaric king. He had an arena used for trials where an accused man had the choice of two doors. One entry held a hungry tiger, the fiercest and most cruel, which would shred him to pieces. In the other door was a lady; if he chose that door, he would immediately marry that lady, even if the man had a wife. Fate would decide whether the man was guilty or not
- In the king's arena, the person who the princess loved was accused. The princess knew which door held the tiger or a lady and could save his life. But, the lady behind the door also loved this man. So if she told her loved one to pick the lady, her man would marry her opponent. If she told him to choose the tiger, he would die, but not get the lady.
- OR
- If she told him to open the door with the tiger, he would die. That awful tiger, those shrieks, that blood! But would it not be better for him to die at once, and go wait for her in the blessed regions of semi-barbaric futurity
- But if the princess told him to choose the door with the lady, he would live, but the lady and the man would immediately get married and she would be so jealous.
- But the princess didn't want the other lady, her rival to get her love. But she also didn't want her love to die So she made a tough decision. To kill him or not. Finally, she decided. On the day of the trial, she raised her hand and made a slight, quick movement toward the right. No one but her lover saw her. Which came out of the opened door - the lady, or the tiger?
- In the opened door, there came out of it a hungry tiger, the fiercest and most cruel that could be procured, and it immediately sprang upon him and tore him to pieces as his punishment.
