- In the story, Lennie and George want to get a piece of land and live on it just the two of them. They want to live there and don't want anyone to tell them what to do, and live off the fatta the land. Steinbeck wants to tell the reader that everyone can dream, but not many can achieve. He wants people to know that the American Dream is a trap and an illusion.
- "An' live off the fatta the lan',"
- "We'd jus' live there. We'd belong there. There wouldn't be no more runnin' round."
- Curley's wife talks about how she could have been an actor and movie star for big plays and shows. She doesn't even want to be with Curley and married him as a last resort. It gives her a distraction from her everyday life, which is miserable for her. Steinbeck lets the reader know that her dream is the best part of her life and that you should chase dreams, even though you may fail because you will regret it in the end.
- "Coulda' been in the movies, an' had nice clothes — all them nice clothes like they wear. An' I coulda sat in them big hotels, an' had pitchers took of me."
- Steinbeck wants us to know, that while dreams can be a glorious part of our life, they can be a beautiful curse. He uses foreshadowing and symbolism to express the theme. He uses the character's emotions and dreams to make the reader feel connected. Dreams may be nice to have, but don't get too attached, as they can be poisonous.
