- But why?
- The U.S. Supreme Court's 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson ruled that the Jim Crow laws should be obeyed. It stated that separate but equal were constitutional.
- Effective today, it is mandated that all races must use separate facilities.

- White and black people shopped separately. Black people were not offered the same options or quality of products.
- Whites Only
- Colored Only
- Leave Now!
- The law was strictly enforced and black people were prohibited from using any areas that was not marked "colored only"
- Get Out!!! This is white only seating!

- Schools were segregated as well. White and black children had separate buildings, teachers, etc... The black schools were under resourced and did not provide the same level of education. This did not end until the Brown vs Board of Education in May of 1954.
- No Negro Girl! You can't come in here. Go to your negro school!

- The unfair treatment of black people on public transportation, led to the Montgomery Boycott in 1955. It was sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks on December 1, 1955.

- Marches were organized to demand the end of segregation, voting rights, better education, better jobs, etc... The marches got the attention of politicians to make changes to civil rights laws.
