  • The beheading of King Louis XIV. He was arrested for treason. Not too long later he was put on trial and by a narrow margin was sentenced to death. He was quickly put in the guillotine and executed. His wife, Marie Antoinette followed her husband 9 months later to the same fate. The reason behind his execution was he reached out to France's rivals for help with a counter rebellion.

  • The Reign of Terror was a very dark time during the French revolution where thousands of people died. During this time, the revolutionary Government was being pressured by civil war inside of France and hostile armies surrounding France. In retaliation, the revolutionary government took harsh measures against those suspected of being enemies of the state.
  • Maximilian Robespierre was a political influence during the french revolution that encouraged tens of thousands of executions.He called for King Louis XVI to be put on trial for treason and won many enemies, but the people of Paris consistently came to his defense. In 1791, he excluded himself from the new Legislative Assembly but continued to be politically active as a member of the Jacobin Club. In 1792, he opposed the war proposal of the Girondins–moderate leaders in the Legislative Assembly–and lost some popularity. eventually he was found to be a fraud and the people he once protected put him in the same spot he put many others.
  • coup d'état, also called coup, the sudden, violent overthrow of an existing government by a small group. Among the earliest modern coups were those in which Napoleon overthrew the Directory on November 9, 1799 , and in which Louis Napoleon dissolved the assembly of France's Second Republic in 1851.
