In World War One, chemical weapons such as mustard gas were much more common.
When the war was over, the Geneva Conventions were signed, which restricted the use of chemical weapons.
Don't use them.
When World War Two came around, all the European countries couldn't use chemical weapons because they signed the Geneva Conventions.
I don't really want to recreate the Holocaust in this fashion. Feels disrespectful
The Japanese, however used chemical weapons against the Chinese during the Second Sino-Japanese war, which was at the same time as World War Two.
The Nazis also lightly used chemical weapons towards the end of the war, but usually didn't because Hitler was paranoid about the allies retaliating with their own.
And, of course, the Nazis used chemicals in the Holocaust, which is the deadliest use of poison gas in history.
