- Ponyboy and Johnny now are at the abandoned church. Johnny and Ponyboy cut their hair and bleach itsothey will be less recognizable. Dally arrives and they go to get food where Dally tells themabout him and the Gang's encounter with Cherry
- Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy converse about Cherry being a spy and wanting to help. Johnny tells Ponyboy and Dally that he wants to go and turn himself in and surprises/angers Dally.
- They drive back to the church. On the way, Dally expresses his concern for Johnny, being worried about what jail will do to him while on Johnny says that he can do it and it isnt fair to Ponyboy and the others.
- Dally, Ponyboy and Johnny arrive at the church to find that it is on fire and people are panicking. Ponyboy and Johnny run inside to save the kids at the back. They all suffer some kind of damage but Johnny's is the worst.
- Ponyboy wakes up in a hospital with a few burns and bruises. The doctor tells him that Dally will be fine, but Johnny is in the worst condition. Dally gets mad at Ponyboy for making the dumb decision to go inside the church.
- When Ponyboy's family and friends/gang members arrive, they're all concerned for him, Johnny and Dally. They see Darry cry for the first time as are the other gang members. They still don't have any news on Johnny.
